Abstract

Bacteria are microscopic organisms that are invisible to the naked eye. They can live in various environments, both inside and outside the body. There are many bacteria outside the body such as Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermis which cause ulcers and acne on the skin. Ashitaba (Angelica keiskei (Miq.) Koidz.) belongs to the Apiaceae family along with celery, gotu kola, moon flowers which have antibacterial compounds. The direct use of extracts is considered ineffective and not safe for the skin so it is formulated to topical dosage in the form of ointment and cream. This research aims to determine the physical quality of topical preparations from the Apiaceae family plants and the antibacterial activity of Ashitaba leaves, as well as topical preparations of the Apiaceae family against pathogenic bacteria. This research was started by extracting Ashitaba leaves using maceration method with 70% ethanol solvent. The study of the Ashitaba leaves antibacterial activity and topical preparations of the Apiaceae family plant was conducted by using a literature review to determine the Ashitaba leaves antibacterial activity and topical preparations of the Apiaceae family against various pathogenic bacterial cells. The results of studies on topical antibacterial activity showed that plants of the Apiaceae family can be formulated as topical preparations with good physical quality and have antibacterial activity against various bacterial cells (Staphylococcus aureus, Propionibacterium acnes, Streptococcus mutants, E. coli, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aerosa) with inhibition zone parameters of Ashitaba extract and topical preparations of the Apiaceae family plants.
