Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus is one of the normal flora of the skin that can cause infectious diseases. The signs of infection are characterized by tissue damage and followed by abcessess. Bangle rhizome (Zingiber cassumunar) and red galanga (Alpinia purpurata K.) suspected to have inhibitory effect on bacterial growth because they contain essential oil, tannin, flavonoid and saponin. This study aims to know the effectiveness of essential oil combinations to S. aureus growth and to know the inhibition diameter zone and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) The method of this study used diffusion and dilution (serial dilutions). Bangle and red galanga were extracted by water and steam distillation method, each to their rendements were 0.2% and 0.057%. The concentration diffusion test of essential oil of bangle and red galanga used were 50%, 25%, 12.5% with their combinations 1:1, 1:3, and 3:1. The dilution test used concentration serial dilutions of 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.125%, 1.56%, and 0.78%. The result of diffusion test combination of essential oil red galanga and bangle with their comparisons of 1:1,1:3,3:1 had inhibition diameter zone of 19,60 mm, 25,30 mm, 31,30 mm respectively. MIC amd MBC on dilution test were obtained 1.56% and 3.125%. Based on the result, can be concluded that the highest antimicrobial potential is their comparisons of combination 3:1 with inhibition diameter zone of 31.30 mm to Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923.
