Abstract

Early aging is currently a problem in society. Factors that are often associated with the main causes of premature aging are free radicals. Antioxidants include compounds which in low levels can inhibit the oxidation rate. Antioxidants can be formulated as cosmetic preparations, one of which is a cream preparation. Terms that must be fulfilled by a good cream preparation, one of which is physically stable. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of variations in emulgator concentration (stearic acid-TEA) on cream preparations of ethanol extract of kedondong leaves (Spondias dulcis Soland. Ex Park) on physical properties and antioxidant activity. Kedondong leaf were extracted using 70% ethanol then formulated into cream with the addition of stearic acid and triethanolamine. Kedondong leaf thick extract, antioxidant cream of kedondong leaf extract and routinely tested free radical scavenging activity against DPPH. The data obtained is compared with the requirements in Indonesian Pharmacopoeia and other decisions. The results showed that variations in stearic acid and TEA concentrations affected the physical characteristics of the cream of ethanol extract of kedondong leaves (Spondias dulcis Soland. Ex Park), the increasing concentrations of stearic acid and TEA were used, the viscosity, stickiness and pH increased while the dispersion decreased. The emulgator concentration did not affect the antioxidant activity. Keywords: emulsifier, stearic acid, triethanolamine, physical quality, antioxidant activity
