Abstract

Diabetes melitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease of which the prevalence is increased in many country. Hyperglycemia in DM causes the oxidative stress being indicated by the decreased of antioxidant substances. Binahong leaf (Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis) one source of natural antioxidant as antidiabetic. The purpose of this research is to know an effect ethanol extract binahong leaf in lower blood glucose levels and malondialdehyde levels. Binahong leaf extracted by uses the maceration method with a solvent ethanol 96%. This research uses 30 white male rats were divided into 6 groups. Group I (normal), II (negative control) given CMC sodium, III (positive control) given glibenclamide, and IV, V, and VI (treatment control ethanol extract binahong leaf doses 12,5 mg/kg bw, 25 mg/kg bw, and 50 mg/kg bw). Treatment was given for 14 days. The measurement of blood glucose used the method GOD-PAP and measurement of malondialdehyde used the method TBARS. The results showed that ethanol extract binahong leaf with extract doses 12,5 mg/kg bw, 25 mg/kg bw, and 50 mg/kg bw can lower blood glucose levels 30,71%, 46,50% and 48,96% and malondialdehyde levels 0,73 nmol/g, 0,22 nmol/g, and 0,17 nmol/g. Dose is comparable control’s group standard of comparison in decreasing blood glucose levels and malondialdehyde level doses 25 mg/kg bw and 50 mg/kg bw.
