Abstract

Purple sweet potato leaves (Ipomoea batatas L.) contain flavonoi, saponins, and tanin. The aim of the experiment was to determine the antibacterial activity of 70% ethanol extract, fraction of n-hexane, ethyl acetate and water from purple sweet potato leaves against the growth of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. Purple sweet potato leaves extracted by maceration with 70% ethanol, then fractionated with n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and watersolvent. After that, tested for antibacterial activity using diffusion method with consentrations of 50%, 25%, 12,5% then the most active fraction was followed by a dilution method with concentrations of 50%, 25%, 12,5%, 6,25%, 3,12%, 1,56%, 0,78%, 0,39%, 0,19% and 0,095%. The result of the experiment by diffusion method showed that ethanol extract, fraction of n-heksan, and etyl acetate fraction has antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. The most active fraction is the fraction of ethyl acetate concentration 50% with the average diameter of inhibition zone was 20 mm. The ethyl acetate fraction of purple sweet potato leaves has the most active antibacterial activity compared with ethanol extract, n-hexane fraction and water fraction. The dilution method of the ethyl acetate fraction showed that the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration was 6,25% and Minimum Bactericide Concentration of the ethyl acetate fraction was 6,25%.
