Abstract

Spatial memory is a part of cognitive function which vitally influences life. Zingiber officinale R var. rubrum. contain various antioxidant substances such as flavonoids, 6-gingerol, and vitamins. which they were thought to have protective effect of learning and memory impairment. This research aimed to find out the effect of fraction of Zingiber officinale R. fraction of histopathologic amount of CA1 pyramidal cells of hippocampus and cerebral cortex. This study was conducted to find out the effect Zingiber officinale R. in spatial memory ability given to mice with variation fraction of water fraction 51 mg/kg BW, ethyl acetid fraction 91 mg/kg BW and n-hexane fraction 128 mg/kg BW kgBW, positive control donepezil 0,65 mg/kgBW, normal control and negative control alcohol 10%. To assess the intelligence memory and spatial memory representation, Y Maze test was used and the result of increased number of hippocampus CA1 Pyramidal cell was analyzed statistically using one-way ANOVA test followed with Tukey analysis. The result of Y Maze and the increased number of hippocampus CA1 pyramidal cell showed that there was a significant difference between alcohol groups compared with donepezil and all of fraction variations: water 51 mg/kgBW, ethyl acetid 91 mg/kgBW, n-hexane 128 mg/kgBW. Histopathologic features of cerebral cortex showed a reduction in amount of dead cells compared to the negative control. Based on the results of this study concluded that the fraction of Zingiber officinale R. are neuroprotective and neurodegenerative.
