Abstract

Hypercholesterolemia is a condition which an increase is happened in total blood cholesterol levels exceeds 200mg/dl can cause CHD. Okra fruit (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench) can be used as a traditional medicine to decrease total cholesterol levels. This research is aimed to know the effect of okra fruit ethanol extract to decrease total cholesterol levels in mice which is fed in high-fat diet and carbohydrates and PTU induction. The extraction method that was used was maceration with 70% of ethanol solvent. This research used 30 tested animals which were fed with HFD and PTU induction for 28 days and it was divided into normal control, hypercholesterolemia control, simvastatin control, dose I (75 mg/kg BW), dose II (150 mg/kg BW) and dose III (300 mg/kg BW). Preparation tests were given for 14 days. Total cholesterol levels were measured on days 0, 7th and 14th using CHOD-PAP method. The data were tested with One Way ANNOVA statistics with P < 0,05 there was significant difference. The test results showed that doses of 75 mg/ Kg BW, 150 mg/ Kg BW and 300 mg/ Kg BW can decrease total cholesterol levels. The ethanol extract of okra fruit with dose of 300 mg/ Kg BW can decrease total cholesterol levels which was not significantly different with comparative control (simvastatin) with total cholesterol levels on day 14th 110mg/dl and simvastatin control 102,4mg/dl while percentage reduction total cholesterol levels in the amount 48,56% and simvastatin control in the amount 52,63%.
