Abstract

Plecostomus is a type of fish belonging to invasive species. Invasive species can be either predator or competitor to the original species. This fish’s main food consists of algae and river sediment by means of sucking the food. The quality of waters in Bengawan Solo river stream belongs to bad category with so many industrial and domestic wastes so that river is potentially contaminated with heavy metals, one of which is lead (Pb). This research aimed to find out whether or not there is lead (Pb) contamination and the lead metal contamination level in plecostomus in Jenar Sub District area. This research employed Atom Absorption Spectrophotometry method. The lead (Pb) heavy metal was measured at 217 nm wavelength. The sample used consisted of 2: samples 1 and 2; the samples were prepared using wet destruction method, with HNO3 65% and H2O2. The result of research showed that the lead (Pb) heavy metal content is 0.6863 mg/kg in sample 1 and 0.4972 mg/kg in sample 2. Considering the maximum threshold as specified by SNI 2729:2013 about heavy metal contamination in the fresh fish, the mean heavy metal content has surpassed the threshold of ≤ 0.3 mg/kg.
