Abstract

Powder is a type of decorative cosmetic product functioned to cover up facial deficiencies such as oily face or uneven skin tone. Powder divided into 2 types: loose powder and compact powder. Compact powder is loose powder pressed into a quite dense cake form so it is not easily broken. Excessive use of compact powder without follow the instructions can cause Acne vulgaris (acnes), dark spot, pimples, irritation and allergy. The aim of this research was to investigate whether the compact powders fulfill the requirement of BPOM standardization 2014. The microbiological examination tested 4 samples of compact powder and applied 5 microbiological test requirements: Total Plate Count (TPC) using Sodium Agar media, Yeast Fungus Score (YFS) using Dicloran Rose Bengoul Chloramphenicol (DRBC) media. Staphylococcus aureus identification using Vogel Johnson Agar (VJA) media, followed by Gram stain, catalase test and coagulase test. Pseudomonas aeruginosa identification using Pseudomonas Selective Agar (PSA) followed by biochemical test and identification of Candida albicans using Sabaround Glukosa Agar (SGA) media. The results of study indicated that based on the examination of 4 compact powder samples, there was 1 sample (compact powder A) fulfill the microbiological requirement, while 3 samples (compact powder B, C and D) did not fulfill the microbiological requirement of BPOM 2014.
