Abstract

One of the plants that can be used as antibacterial is onion plant (Allium cepa L.). E. coli ATCC 25922 is the cause of diarrhea in developing countries. Onions contain several active substances such as allin, flavonoids, saponins, petrin, allisin and among them can inhibit bacterial growth. The purpose of this study is to find out onion extract has inhibitory power on Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Escherichhia coli ATCC 25922 bacteria. The experiment was carried out using a diffusion method which included preparing samples, making culture suspense, making media, identifying bacteria, and testing diffusion. Observations based on the presence or absence of resistance activities in forming a inhibition zone (mm). Based on research obtained onion extract can inhibit growth Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Escherichhia coli ATCC 25922 bacteria. In S. aureus ATCC 25923 bacteria, all concentrations of onion extract showed the same inhibitory results of 7 mm. Whereas in E. coli ATCC 25922 the concentration of onion extract was the most inhibitory, namely 100% concentration of 9 mm. From this study it can be concluded that onion extract has a inhibitory effect on S. aureus ATCC 25923 and E. coli ATCC 25922.
