Abstract

Thalassemia is a blood disorder caused by unbalanced globin synthesis resulting in damage to hemoglobin and recessive inheritance, the handling is done by regular blood transfusions. Repeated blood transfusions in the long term lead to the accumulation of iron in the body. The purpose of this study was to determine the activity of extract M. indica L leaf as an iron chelating in vitro, ability to decreased levels of ferritin, serum ALT activity and liver histopathology rats induced Ferro sulphate. This study uses the FIC to measure the iron chelating ability and using 6 groups of rats, namely the normal, control group, negative control, positive control, ethanol extract each dose of 200 mg, 400 mg, 800 mg/kg BB rats. Each group consisted of 5 mice. The treatment was done for 21 days. Normal group of rats were given CMC 0,5 %, not induced ferrous sulfate, Whereas the positive control, negative and extract induced Ferro sulphate. Positive group treated deferoxamine, untreated negative controls, from day 1 to day 21. Blood and liver sample is collected on day 22. Results, greater concentration would give a percentage value of the metal chelate ability also increase further, at a dose of extract 200 mg, 400 mg, 800 mg/kg BB rats give effect to the decrease in ferritin levels, SGPT and reduction pesentase rat liver damage, statistical test, the data were normally distributed (p> 0.05), homogeneous and provide significant effect (p <0.05). On the measurement of dose ferritin levels 800 mg equivalent to the normal group and positive. On the measurement of dose levels of alanine amino transferase 800 mg is equivalent to the positive group and the percentage of liver damage in doses 800 mg equivalent to the normal group and positive.
