Abstract

Hibiscus leaf (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) has antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Hibiscus leaf cream formulated in dosage forms to facilitate the application on the skin because Staphylococcus aureus often causes skin infections such as boils. This study was aimed to determine the effect of addition concentration of ethanol extract hibiscus leaf agains physical properties and antibacterial activity Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. Hibiscus leaf extract obtained by soxhletation using 70% ethanol. Ethanol extract cream made with hibiscus leaf concentrations of 0.79; 1.57, and 3.13% w / w, negative control, and positive control of the creams on the market. Cream hibiscus leaf ethanol extract tested physical properties (organoleptic, homogeneity, viscosity, and power dispersive) and tested antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Physical properties of the data were analyzed with regression correlation, while the inhibition was analyzed using one way anova. The results showed that the greater the concentration of the addition of ethanol extract of hibiscus leaves can increase the viscosity of the cream and reduce the spread cream. Differences in the concentration of ethanol extract of hibiscus leaves cause differences in antibacterial power where more and more concentration of the extract was also greater antibacterial power.
