Abstract

Oyong (Luffa acutangula (L) Roxb.) is a traditional medicinal plant which empirically efficacious as antidiabetic which contains the active ingredient are saponin, flavonoid, and triterpenoid. This study aimed to determine the hypoglycemic effect and combination of oyong seed infusion and metformin which most effective in mice that have insulin resistance due to obesity. The obesity conditions very related with insulin resistance. Experimental animals were induced high-fat feed for 4 weeks. Test preparation were given for 9 days, blood glucose levels were checked in all treatment groups on day 0, 5, and 9. The test animals were devided in 6 group: the negative control group (aquadestillata); 1,3 mg/20 g bw metformin; 0,4 ml/20 g bw oyonf seed infuse, combination of oyong seed infuse and metformin (0,75:0,25); (0,5:0,5); (0,25:0,75). The obtained data were analyzed by one way ANOVA (significant set at p <0.05). The results showed that all combinations can decrease blood glucose levels significantly and combination of oyong seed infusion with metformin showed decreasing in glucose levels which are comparable to the single infusion usage of metformin and oyong seed infusion in mice that have insulin resistance due to obesity . This means the oyong seed infuse decreased dose of metformin so side effect of metformin can be reduced. Keywords: Luffa acutangula., metformin, insulin resistance, antidiabetic, infusion.
