Abstract

Diarrhea is defecation condition with a lot of fluid and symptom of certain diseases. Diarrhea caused by stimulation in autonomic nervous at intestinal wall so can arouse reflex which accelerating peristaltic so causing diarrhea. This study was aimed to determine effect of ethanol extract of betel nut (Areca cathecu L.) and determine the effective dose as antidiarrheal. Ethanol extract of betel nut was made by maceration method with 96% ethanol. This study was conducted on 30 white male mice (Mus musculus) which grouped into 6 groups. The treatment group induced Oleum ricini. Group 1 normal control (without treatment), group 2 negative control (CMC 0.5%), group 3 positive control of Diapet suspension 3.12 mg/kg BW, group 4 ethanol extract of betel nut 80 mg/kg BW, group 5 extract ethanol of betel nut 120 mg/kg BW, and group 6 ethanol extract of betel nut 160 mg/kg BW. Conducted observation to diarrhea frequency, faeces weight and faeces consistency. Data were analyzed by Kolmogorov Smirnov, followed by two-way ANOVA test then Post Hoc Test. The results showed that ethanol extract of betel nut had antidiarrheal effect. The most effective dose of extract as antidiarrheal was 160 mg/kg BW. Ethanol extract of betel nut dose 160 mg/kg BW affect to diarrhea frequency, faeces weight, and faeces consistency of test animal.
