Abstract

Infectious disease is the most type of disease suffered caused by Staphylococcus aureus in developing countries. Treatment of these infection typically use antibiotics, but there is a risk of bacterial resistance to antibiotic, so it is necessary development using traditional medicinal plant. The purpose of this study was to determine the activity of antibacterial in extract of Secang Wood plant against Staphylococcus aureus, and determine significant difference between extract of Secang wood plant which can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. A total of 500 gram of Secang Wood sawdust extracted using maceration method using ethanol 70% then concentrated. Extract of Secang Wood was made concentrations of 75%, 50%, 25%, 10%, by diluted with sterile distilled water. Positive control used was amoxcilin, while negative control used was sterile distilled water. Test of antibacterial activity of Staphylococcus aureus was conducted by diffusion. Data of inhibition zone diameter were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA and further tested by Duncan. The results showed that the extract of Secang Wood was potent as antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus. Concentration extract of Secang Wood which had the biggest inhibition in this study was concentration 75% with average inhibition zone as 13.3 mm.
