Abstract

Damage various tissues and complications of diabetes thought to be caused by oxidative stress. The medicinal plants with antioxidant potential can be used to prevent and protect against futher damage after a diabetes. The purpose of this research was to determine the activity of anthyperglycemic, enchancement SOD and GPx enzyme and to determine the most activity dosage to increase SOD and GPx enzymes. This research was used five groups of Wistar male rats. The first group as a normal control. The second group as a negative control (alloxan). The third group as a positive control (glibenclamide). The fourth and fifth groups as test groups nutmeg ethanol-extract and was given 125 mg/kg BW and 250 mg/kg BW dosage for 28 days. The test material was administered orally then the weight, blood glucose levels and SOD and GPx enzyme of the rats are measured. The results showed that the test group with dosage 250 mg/dl of nutmegextract, decrease in blood glucose levels which was same to the positive control, when compared to the group with 125 mg/kg BW dosage. Increased levels of SOD and GPx significantly occurred at 250 mg/kg BW of the dosage group was compared with dosage of 125 mg/kg BW. Thus the ethanol-extract of nutmeg was capable of lowering blood glucose levels in the rats and increase SOD and GPx enzymes in diabetes rats that its effectiveness is comparable to the size of the dosage.
