Abstract

Bay leaves and garlic is one of the main plants used for the treatment of diabetes empirically. Bay leaves and garlic has some potent chemical content, such as Alcaloids, flavonoids, essential oils and saponins. This study aims to determine the antidiabetic activity of ethanolic extract of bay leaves and garlic as well as to determine the dose is effective in lowering blood glucose levels in rats induced by alloxan. The extraction method used maceration with 96% ethanol. The test animals were divided into seven groups, each group consisted of 5 male rats, the negative control group I (CMC 0.5%); group II positive control (glibenclamide) at a dose of 0,45 mg/kgBB rats; group III leaves (100 mg/kgBW rats); IV garlic group (60 mg/kgBW rats); Group V combination leaves 25% : garlic 75% (25 mg/kgBB : 45 mg/kgBW rats); Group VI combinations of bay leaves 50% : 50% garlic (50 mg/kgBW : 30 mg/kgBW rats); Group VII combination leaves 75% : 25% garlic (75 mg/kgBW : 15 mg/kgBW rats). All groups alloxan induced on day 0 (after fasted for 8 hours) intraperitoneally. Examination of blood sugar levels done on day 17 and 21 after the administration of the test preparation. The test results showed that the ethanolic extract of bay leaves and garlic has antidiabetic activity. The ethanolic extract dose combination bay leaves 75% : 25% garlic (75 mg/kgBW : 15 mg/kgBW) can lower blood glucose levels the most effective dose than the other extracts.
