Abstract

Hyperlipidemia is the high concentration of fat (cholesterol, triglycerides or both) in the blood. Consumption of sugary foods, alcohol, coconut milk and carbohydrates in excess will increase triglyceride levels that can cause hyperlipidemia and even fatal cardiovascular disease. Okra fruit (Abelmoschus esculentus (l.) Moench) has benefits to overcome hyperlipidemia conditions. This research is aimed to know the effect of okra fruit ethanol extract and the effective dose to decrease triglyceride levels. The okra fruit ethanol extract was obtained with maceration method using 70% of ethanol solvent. The rats which were used were 30 and then it was divided into 6 groups namely normal control grup, hypertriglyceridemia control, gemfibrozil control and okra fruit ethanol extract group with doses of 75 mg/Kg BW, 150 mg/Kg BW and 300 mg/Kg BW. The rats were induced with propylthiouracil 2 mg/ Kg BW and also fed with high fats and carbohydrates for 28 days, after that, the rats were given preparation test for 14 days. The triglycerides levels were measured on days 0, 7th and 14th. The determination method of triglycerides levels which was used was GPO-PAP method. The results showed that okra fruit ethanol extract in doses 75 mg/Kg BW, 150 mg/Kg BW and 300 mg/Kg BW can decrease triglyceride levels of rats was in dose 300 mg/Kg BW with decrease percentage on day 14th in the amount 47,35% which were not significantly different with gemfibrozil control with decrease percentage in the amount 54,27%.
