Abstract

Binahong leaves (Anredera cordifolia [Ten.] Steenis) and taro leaves (Colocasia esculenta [L.] Schott) has containing flavonoids, saponins, tannins, alkaloids, and terpenoids that are suspected of having antibacterial activity. The purpose of this study was to determine which of the extracts of binahong leaves and taro leaves and combination of both has the most effective antibacterial activity to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli ATCC 25922. Extraction of binahong leaves and taro leaves and combination of both used maceration methods with 96% ethanol. The extraction results were carried out by a preliminary test with a diffusion method to find out the most effective antibacterial activity a combination of 1:1, 1:3 and 3:1. The concentration used for the diffusion test is 50%. Results of test the most effective diffusion continued dilution test to determine the value of the MBC with a concentration of 33,33%; 16,66%; 8,33%; 4,16%; 2,08%; 1,04%; 0,52%; 0,26%; 0,13%; 0,06%, against Escherichia coli ATCC 25 922. Results of the research on diffusion test of each extract has an antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922. The most effective activity was shown on the combination of the extract of binahong leaves and taro leaves with a ratio of 3:1 with the inhibition area diameter 25,75 mm. The value result of dilution test of MBC from binahong leaves extract, taro leaves, and combination of 3:1 were 4,16%, 16,66%, and 2,08%.
