Abstract

One of the medicinal plants that are often tested and used is a stem of citronella fragrance (Cymbopogon nardus L. Rendle). Sitronelal is an active compound of citronella stems that have antibacterial activity. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of essential oil spray gel of citronella stem against the growth of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 bacteria in vivo.This study used three formulations with the consecutive content of essential oil of 0.7% concentration; 1.4%; 2.8%; plus a positive control formula (Gentamicin 0.1%) and a negative control (base spray gel) tested against the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria in vivo by counting the number of colonies as well as seeing from the healing of an infection wound on the rabbit's back .. Essential oil is destilled by water vapor distillation method to be tested its antibacterial activity on rabbit skin infected with Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 bacteria using spray gel preparation with three essential oil formulations that is 0.7% concentration; 1.4%; 2.8%; coupled with two control formulas namely positive control (0.1% Gentamicin) and negative control. Data obtained by counting the number of colonies as well as seeing from the wound healing infection on the rabbit's back. The test result data was analyzed statistically using Kolmogorv-Smirnov Method which will be followed by two way analysis method of analysis of varian (ANOVA). Based on the research, the preparation of spray gel of essential oil of citronella stem has antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 bacteria. The most effective smear formulation of essential oil spray gel is 2.8% concentration where the results obtained after observation and analyzed using statistic have no significant difference with positive control.
